Beans are just a type of plant seed, and people have been eating them for about as long as we’ve been cooking. From lima beans, to black beans, to green beans, it would be difficult to find people in the modern world who haven’t eaten their fair share of beans.

They all contain good amounts of soluble fiber, carbohydrates, protein, folate, and iron, and due to their macronutrient content, many people believe that beans should have a place in anyone’s diet. They’re also extremely cheap and keep you full due to their high protein content.

Most types of beans such as red kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans should be avoided on a standard ketogenic diet due to their high carbohydrate content. Most cooked beans contain about 12 grams of net carbs per 3 oz. .

There are some exceptions such as green beans and black soybeans that only contain about 2 grams of net carbs per 3 oz. . If you tolerate more carbs, feel free to add any beans of your choice.

Other potential substitutes for beans might include chopped zucchini or mushrooms, both of which provide additional texture with a very subtle flavor.

Can I Make This Low Carb Chili Recipe In A Crock

Yes, of course! This chili is great in the slow cooker too.

I love my crockpot for dishes like this. This chili recipe works perfectly in the slow cooker for days you know youll have a good 8 hours away from the kitchen. Nothing better than coming home tired and hungry and having an on-plan hot meal waiting for you.

To make this easy low carb chili in the crockpot, you will need to saute the garlic, peppers, and onions in with the ground beefbefore adding them to the slow cooker. Once thats done though, you just toss everything into the crockpot for 8 hours on low.

If at the end of the 8 hours, your chili is still too liquidy, you can remove the lid and let it simmer for another 30 minutes to an hour to help the liquid cook out.

  • Protease inhibitors. These are compounds that block your body’s protein-digesting enzyme, protease. Over time, this can also increase the chances of leaky gut.

Note: The reason why people are so careful about soaking raw beans before cooking them is to reduce some of these harmful components. Cooking them correctly will help prevent you from consuming any of these harmful ingredients listed above.

Heat you olive oil in a large pan and sauté your onion, celery, pepper and garlic until golden brown and fragrant. Then, add in your turkey and sautéed until it begins to brown.

What Is The Ketogenic Diet

    Follow the instructions for the stove top, but transfer to the slow cooker when it is time to simmer and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours.

    How To Make Low Carb Chili

    If you can dice, chop, and sauté, you can make chili. Its an easy recipe thats ready in less than 30 minutes if you make it on the stove-top.

    Cook the beefBrown the beef and garlic in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Drain off excess fat, set aside.

    Sauté the veggiesAdd the oil, onions, celery, carrots, and seasonings to the pot and cook until the onions are translucent. Add the zucchini and cook for 2 minutes.

    Combine and simmerAdd the cooked beef to the skillet along with the tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir and bring to a boil, before reducing the heat to medium and simmering for 20 minutes.

    ServeOnce the chili is thickened, remove from heat and serve.

    What Kind Of Soybeans Should You Use In Your Chili

    You can go with the canned black soybeans that are ready to rock right out of the can.

    Or, you can save a little money and buy the dried soybeans. Groceries are really expensive in the High Rocky Mountains so I do this.

    I put a cup in my Foodi-pro and pressure cook them for about 20-25 minutes. At a lower altitude they may only need to be cooked for 15-20 minutes in a pressure cooker or insta-pot.

    And, if you have picky kids who hate beans…they may like these. My teen prefers soybeans to the pinto or kidney beans in the more traditional chili recipe. She says its a texture thing but I find the textures quite similar.

    How To Make This Low Carb Chili Recipes:

    Were going to start by browning some ground beef with onion and bell pepper. This is a super hearty chili and we like lots of beef here!

    Once the meat is browned, youll add in some minced jalapeno and garlic. The jalapeno doesnt make this too spicy, but it does give it a nice little kick of flavor. Feel free to adjust to your own tastes.

    Season things up with some chili powder, cumin, and salt.

    Tomato products can be pretty high in carbs, so rather than using tomato sauce like I would in my traditional chili recipe, Im using tomato paste and beef broth. Trust methis is going to be good.

    Youll also stir in a can of diced tomatoes.

    Simmer your chili for as youd likethe longer it cooks the more flavorful it gets and the more tender the beef gets.

    I like to let it simmer for a couple of hours over really low heat but Ive also served this after just a 20 minute. Its delicious either way!

    We top our chili with freshly grated cheddar and a dollop of sour cream.
