Carbs Is The Bodys Main Energy Source Myth Or Truth

Carbohydrates is often labeled as the main energy source for the human body. It is not exactly true. The human body is capable of deriving glucose from fat and protein. However, it is most convenient and cost-efficient for the body to produce energy from carbohydrates. Unlike fat and protein, carbohydrates can be easily metabolize into glucose along the digestive tract and released into the bloodstream as immediate energy for other organs.

If there is an excess amount of glucose, it will be stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. According to the Iowa State University medical research, the average human body can conserve up to about 2,000 calories of glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles. It is only when the glycogen capacity reach its maximum will carbs be changed to fat for storing in the adipose tissues.

What Happens If You Do Not Consume Enough Carbohydrates?

When a person does not consume enough carbs and there is not enough glycogen storage, the body will switch into metabolizing protein as fuel source. For individuals who have never been on a low-carb diet, this can lead to a case of hypoglycemia. The symptoms are:

  • Extreme hunger
  • Nausea
  • Headache

But for individuals who follow an extremely low carb diet for long duration of time, this may cause various health problems. You may wonder why would there be a problem for the body to use protein as energy source. Here are two reasons:

  • Abdominal pain

Have A Healthy Snack Before Going Out To Eat

Eating out in restaurants can spell trouble for lower-carb diets. Bread before the meal, fries with the entrée, and those temptingly sweet desserts. Plan ahead and have a healthy, low-carb snack and drink a glass of water before going out. Maybe the bread basket wont look so tempting if youre not quite as hungry when you get to the table.

Easy Ways to Cut Carbs

Folic acid is the building block of fetal spine and skull development. According to the Centers for Disease Control , all women who are at childbearing age should take in at least 400 mg folic acid per day. For pregnant women, the dose should be doubled to 800 mg per day. But why is this so crucial to low-carb diets?

This vitamin B is found mostly in foods that are high in carbohydrate content such as grains, fruits, vegetables, pasta, bread, cereal, and rice. For women who choose to follow the low-carb diet health trends, they are at risk of not taking in enough folic acids. A very recent medical study done by University of North Carolina, they have found that pregnant women who are on any type of low carbohydrate diets tend to have a much higher incidence of suffering from low folic acid levels. In other recent health surveys, the statistics have shown that only 30% of women in the United States receive the recommended daily dosage.

Impact of Folic Acid Deficiency

Other medical survey studies also indicate that low-carb and high protein diets are equally dangerous for pregnancy as it causes high cortisol levels in expecting mothers. The babies of these mothers eventually will be more likely to develop high blood pressure earlier in life.

Can You Eat Carbs And Still Lose Weight

Yes, definitely! The keto diet is about eating quality foods within optimal quantities to facilitate nutritional ketosis which is when your body switches from burning sugars as fuel to burning fat.

These quality foods referred to also include whole, nutrient-dense carbohydrates that are high in fiber.

As the keto diet limits carbs to around 20 grams per day, its clear that carbs are very much still a part of the keto diet, albeit in smaller, healthier quantities that facilitate efficient fat burning.

Do you love tucking into a bowl of pasta or does the very idea make you uneasy? If its the latter, its hardly surprising.

The anti-carb crusaders tells us carbs make us fat and increase the risk of heart disease. But is this true? Or is cutting back on carbs bad for us? Sue Quinn investigates.

For people struggling to lose weight, its an appealing notion: slash your carb intake to turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Yet scientific opinion about the importance of carbs is still divided.

Increasingly, research suggests that cutting back might be beneficial, especially to treat type-2 diabetes and obesity. But official dietary advice, such as from the NHS Choices website, continues to state that carbs should make up one third of our total diet . The public has good reason to be confused.

A bit of history

Low-carb diets are nothing new. In the mid-19th century, William Banting published a paper in The Lancet expounding the benefits of a low-carb/high-fat diet for weight loss. Cardiologist Dr Robert Atkins took up the baton in the 1970s, gaining millions of followers.

Stay Within The Proper Macronutrients

A risk associated with the total calories method is the potential to lose sight of an optimal macronutrient split for efficient fat burning.

In other words, someone could still be in a calorie deficit but be consuming higher amounts of carbs and lower amounts of healthy fats compared to the keto follower.

In the former situation, this could result in experiences of cravings and hunger which could make the calorie deficit method unsustainable over the long-term and slow the metabolism.

Symptoms Of Overloading Carbohydrates

Here are some signs that you are eating too much carbohydrates:

  • You appear bloated.
  • Carbohydrates loves to bind with water in a 1 to 3 ratio. For every gram of carbs you take in, your body will hold onto 3 grams of water. This can solve the mystery of why you look so much heavier and bloated after binging on surgery foods.

  • You go into withdrawal mode craving for more sugar.
  • Whenever you eat surgery food, your brain will respond by releasing the feel-good dopamine hormone. And the more carbs you eat, the more dopamine is released. Over time, your body will become addicted to the positive feedback. When you stop eating carbs, your body will go into withdrawal mode. As a matter of fact, some people have compared the sensation to caffeine addiction.

  • You feel hungry constantly.
  • If your diet consists mainly of carbs, the food source will be quickly processed unlike proteins and fats. Consequently, you will be less satiated and become hungry faster than if your diet comprise mainly of protein. This problem will be worse if the carbs you consume are simple carbs and processed foods.

  • Your skin will be more prone to acne.
  • Medical studies have demonstrated that high glycemic foods have a tendency to aggravate acne problem. Research tests have also shown that the skin quality and acne problem greatly improves when the participants are placed on a high protein and low glycemic diet.

  • You suffer from mood swings and fatigue.
  • You become more forgetful.
  • You become extra flabby.

Mike and I have been looking through the pages of ASweetLife recently and commenting on how much weve grown and changed since the early days of the site. One of the things thats noticeably different is our stand on carbs. We went from eating healthful, whole grain carbs to almost totally cutting out carbs. When did that happen? I asked Mike.

I went on the Paleo Diet, he said.

    That was two years ago.

I remember feeling terrified when Mike decided to go Paleo. I wanted to support him, but I didnt know how I would manage with him on a no carb diet. On occasion I eat chicken and on rare occasions, I eat fish. Other than that, I do not consume meat. And meat is a big part of the Paleo Diet. Mike is the one who cooks in our home. I count on him for that. If not for Mike I would be eating only cheese and almond butter all day, every day. If all he cooked was meat, what would I do?

This all came to mind this morning when I read Scott Johnsons post on Diabetes Monitor. Scott says:

I am grossed out by meat. Im bothered by the texture of it and the thoughts of what happened between farm and plate. Grosses me right out. You might ask if I consider myself a vegetarian? Well, I dont really know how to answer that. I dont eat a lot of veggies either. Or fruits. So whats left? Carbohydrates.

    1. Cut sugar out of your diet. White sugar and brown sugar. Dont worry about any other carbs.

    8. Cut out corn. Yeah no more popcorn :(.

How To Cut Carbs Out Of Diet ~ superdesignveloper

During a keto diet, you’ll lose water weight first, which can be misleading, and then the non-water weight will follow. A 2013 meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition that compared low-carb ketogenic diets with traditional low-fat diets found that low-carb diets could be effective in reducing obesity rates. But when you consider the long-term health concerns mentioned earlier, cutting them out altogether doesn’t seem like a healthy long-term option.

Tip #: Set Your Daily Carb Limit

Setting your daily carb limit depends on what you want to achieve as well as the type of diet you are following.

If you are unsure of how many carbs you should be eating per day, consider the following categories of carb levels. Generally, a low-carb diet is considered to be:

    • < 100g/day = moderate low-carb
    • < 50g/day = low-carb
    • < 20g/day = keto

Many readers like to begin by simply reducing their carbs to a level that is sustainable and weight loss still occurs. Choose simple low-carb meals for beginners and begin to make easy low-carb side dishes.

Is Eating Fat Ok On A Low

With extra protein taken off the list of foods to replace your reduced carb intake, you are left with adding fat.

But, you cant eat more fatRight? After all, youve been told for decades that eating fat makes you fat.

Since the 1970s, The United States Governments Dietary Guidelines have been telling us that a high-fat diet causes obesity and heart disease. So increasing your daily fat intake must be a bad idea?!?

With starchy carbs gone, and warnings to not eat excessive protein or fat, youre left with very little to eat.

Unfortunately, that is called a starvation diet, and your body tends to rebel when you dont feed it.

So, how do you cut carbs without starving or being so miserable that life is no longer worth living?

    Well, there is a solution.

How Much Protein Should You Consume While Cutting

Protein also has a high thermic effect of food, meaning it takes a lot of energy to break down, which is great during a cutting phase. A target of 2-2.4g per kilogram of bodyweight each day is good for most people on a bodybuilding cut. 3

Lets stay with our example of 90kg bodyweight. We have a calorie-intake target of 2000kcals per day and a protein target of 180g . 1g of protein has 4kcals, so this is 720kcals per day.

Summary: While we need a calorie deficit for successful cutting, getting enough protein is essential to preserve muscle.

Cutting Carbs But Still Not Losing Weight

Low-carb diets aren’t the only key to weight loss and health.

“Carbohydrate” was once just a noun used to refer to a macronutrient, but it has now become “carbs,” the noun to avoid, to blame and to count, laments Registered Dietitian Ashley Koff, founder of The Better Nutrition Program.

The prevailing sentiment that carbs are the enemy grew as the number of “hyper processed, refined and fortified” foods grew, Koff tells CNET. Those kinds of foods — sugary cereals, white bread, candy and the like — contain empty calories, or calories void of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Not all carbs are bad, though: “Foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, may be high in carbs and calories sometimes, but they are not empty,” Koff says. “They deliver fiber, protein, B vitamins and other nutrients.”

People often turn to low-carb or keto diets as a quick way to lose weight — keto diets are known to induce rapid weight loss in the first few weeks, but it’s not always sustainable. For one thing, everyone is different and won’t see the same results on a low-carb diet, Koff explains, and secondly, it’s hard to keep up with a carb-free diet long-term.

Koff recommends that anyone considering carb reduction or elimination should work with a qualified professional and discuss short- and long-term benefits. If you wonder if your current carb intake is too high, Koff recommends keeping a food journal and sharing it with your doctor.

If cutting back on carbs and eating more healthy fats and proteins works for you, you could work your way up to more strict keto guidelines.

“There are a few different distributions of macronutrients that you could follow if you’re on the keto diet, but one common distribution is eating 5% of your total calories from carbs, 20% from protein, and 75% from fat,” Pike said, adding that such a low amount of carbs doesn’t meet the dietary needs of most people.
